The National Blood Service (NBS) is responsible for collecting 7000 voluntary blood donations on a daily basis for use in hospitals in England and North Wales. Each year we collect approximately two million units of blood from 1.3 million blood donors.

Only four per cent of the eligible population are active blood donors which is why we are always keen to welcome new donors. As blood has a short shelf life of just 35 days, regular donors are always in demand and can give blood up to three times a year.

Some blood donors are suitable to become platelet donors and they must have given blood successfully at least once. Platelets are tiny fragments of cells in the blood which aid clotting and prevent bleeding and these are collected at the Moorfields Donor Centre, Dale Street, Liverpool city centre.

Platelets can help patients suffering from Leukaemia and other cancers as a result of their disease or treatment. It is also donated to patients following major surgery or those suffering from severe infection and each donation can help up to three adults or 12 children.
